Watford win the first ever FA Walking Football Finals
Watford made history at the inaugural St George’s Park on Sunday 3rd November when they played in the first ever FA Walking Football Cup.
Their first match was against tough opposition, Forest Vets. A great ball through from Neil to Sof, and with some ‘Sof’ magical footwork, Watford went quickly into the lead, 1-0. It wasn’t long before a mistake in midfield led to an equaliser from Forest’s number 9.
A few minutes later, the Forest number 9 was left unmarked and scored another goal. Our hearts were in our mouths but the team dug deep and played some great football, determined to nick a goal back. Sof had a couple of great shots but he was heavily marked and the keeper pulled off a couple of great saves.
Finally another great chance fell for Sof, only to be taken out on the edge of the area by ex-pro (Nottingham Forest) Nigel Jemson. The referee gave a penalty to Watford and saw Jemson blue-carded, and sent to the sin bin for 3 minutes. Sof took the penalty and slotted it right in the left hand corner. It was now 2-2 with little game time left.
A minute later Watford were awarded another penalty but a great save by the Forest keeper kept them in the game. The fulltime whistle went and the teams battled it out with penalties.
Watford ended up triumphant and go down in history as the first over 50s Walking Football FA Cup Final winners.
